Alameda County Supervisors Approve $3.5 Million to Support Immigrant Legal Defense

In a decisive move reflecting its commitment to immigrant communities, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors has approved a $3.5 million funding package aimed at bolstering legal support for immigrants facing deportation. This allocation will enhance services provided by the Alameda County Public Defender’s Office, support community-based legal organizations, and maintain a rapid response hotline for reporting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity.

The funding is a direct response to heightened deportation efforts under the current federal administration, which have instilled fear among immigrant families, affecting school attendance and access to healthcare. Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas, who championed the initiative, emphasized the county’s responsibility to protect due process rights for all residents, regardless of immigration status.

“This investment ensures that our immigrant neighbors have access to the legal representation they deserve,” said Supervisor Bas. “It’s about upholding justice and keeping families together.”

The approved funds will also support the Alameda County Immigration Legal and Education Partnership, a coalition that provides legal services and community education. While some critics argue that resources should prioritize citizens, supporters contend that the measure strengthens the county’s commitment to human rights and due process.

This action follows the Board’s recent appointment of Ursula Jones Dickson as the new District Attorney, signaling a broader shift in the county’s approach to justice and community support
