As Nairobi chokes on some of the worst urban air pollution in the world, two teenagers just did what billion-dollar climate programs have struggled to deliver: a fix that actually works, and actually gets used.

Two boys. A pile of coconut shells. A problem nobody in power had solved. That is the story of HewaSafi, and it should embarrass every agency that has spent public money chasing the same result.

Air pollution kills more people worldwide each year than malaria and HIV combined, and Kenya’s matatus, the privately owned minibuses that move millions of commuters daily, are a major source of it in cities like Nairobi. For years, proposed fixes have followed a familiar script: mandates, subsidies, imported technology, and price tags most matatu owners could never afford. What Problem Were They Actually Trying to Solve?

Kariuki’s motivation was not academic. He has lived with a chronic lung condition since childhood, tied to growing up around heavy air pollution in Kenya, and still takes weekly medication for it. Onsarigo watched friends and family suffer the same way. Rather than wait for a government program to address it, the two students at M-PESA Foundation Academy in Kiambu County spent their free time designing an alternative.

The result, HewaSafi, Swahili for clean air, is a multi-stage exhaust filter built from coconut shells, maize cobs, steel mesh, copper, recycled battery materials, and a living algae component. Each layer targets a different pollutant as exhaust passes through the system.

What Do the Numbers Actually Show?

The performance data is where the story stops being heartwarming and starts being genuinely disruptive. In testing, HewaSafi reduced harmful PM2.5 particulates — the fine matter that lodges deep in human lungs — by roughly 93 percent. The team’s stated plan is to produce roughly 1,200 filters in partnership with local artisans and eventually build a product family suited to different vehicles and budgets.

None of this required a new regulation or a taxpayer-funded rollout. It required two people willing to build something and test it.

Is the Earth Prize Win as Big as the Headlines Suggest?

Here is where some of the viral posts about this story get ahead of the facts. HewaSafi won the Africa regional award at the 2026 Earth Prize, a Geneva-based youth environmental competition, earning $12,500 in funding — not the global $100,000 prize. That top award, announced May 29, went to a team of Indian teenagers for Plas-Stick, a biodegradable powder that removes microplastics from water.

The distinction matters. HewaSafi is a serious, well-tested regional winner with real funding and a real pilot program, not a headline-grabbing global champion. The facts are impressive enough without inflating them.

That is the real test of whether this becomes a lasting solution or a well-covered pilot program that quietly fades.
